Originally titled Baldi’s Basics in Education and Learning, this bizarre indie title took the internet by storm upon its release in March 2018 for the Meta Game Jam. Developed entirely by Micah McGonigal (mystman12), the game is a brilliant, unsettling parody of cheap 1990s edutainment software like Sonic’s Schoolhouse or Mario is Missing.

What begins as a poorly rendered, seemingly innocent math game quickly spirals into a frantic, terrifying survival horror experience. You are tasked with helping a friend collect 7 notebooks left behind in a sprawling schoolhouse. Your guide is Baldi, a bizarrely friendly teacher who rewards you with a shiny quarter for answering simple math equations correctly.

But there is a catch. The third question of the second notebook reveals the game’s true nature: it is a broken string of overlapping, corrupted numbers. It is literally impossible to solve. The moment you get it wrong, Baldi’s face contorts in anger, the cheerful music violently stops, and the terrifying, rhythmic SLAP of his ruler against his hand begins to echo through the halls. The hunt is on.

The Schoolhouse Denizens

To beat the game, you don’t just have to escape Baldi. The school is populated by an ensemble of poorly modeled, hilariously annoying characters explicitly designed to ruin your run:

• The Principal of the Thing: He wanders the halls strictly enforcing school rules. If he catches you breaking a rule (like sprinting down the hallway), he will teleport you to detention. “No running in the halls.”
• Playtime: A poorly drawn girl holding a jump rope. If she spots you, she will force you to stop and play her jump rope mini-game for ten unbearable seconds while Baldi approaches.
• It’s a Bully: A massive, pixelated character who completely blocks hallways. He will not let you pass unless you hand over one of your consumable items.
• Arts and Crafters: A giant sock puppet who becomes extremely aggressive and teleports you straight to Baldi if you stare at him after collecting all 7 notebooks.
• Gotta Sweep: A massive sentient broom that rushes incredibly fast down the hallways, aggressively sweeping away the player, Baldi, and anyone else in its path.
• First Prize: A robot that simply wants to hug. It will violently push you down the hallway, severely altering your position.

Survival Strategy and Items

As you gather more notebooks, Baldi speeds up. By the time you collect the 7th notebook, his ruler slaps are almost a continuous blur of sound, and he moves faster than your walking speed. You must manage your stamina carefully.

Because you cannot outrun him forever, you must utilize items found around the school:

• BSODA: Sprays a massive wave of blue soda down the hall, pushing Baldi and other characters far away from you.
• Energy Flavored Zesty Bar: Instantly restores your stamina bar so you can keep sprinting.
• Safety Scissors: Highly useful for cutting Playtime’s jump rope or disabling First Prize’s wiring to escape their traps.
• Quarter: Can be used to buy items from vending machines or given to It’s a Bully to pass him.
